The Angel of North steel sculpture was unveiled in 1998. The Angel spreads its 54m wings to welcome all who enter Tyneside, and remind them of the workers who once mined coal in the ground underneath. Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North is probably Britain’s most famous work of public modern art.

Work began on the project in 1994 and cost £1 million.The Angel  was finished on 16 February 1998 it is believed to be the largest angel sculpture in the world It is one of the most viewed pieces of art in the world-seen by more than one person every second,90,000 every day or 33 million every year It will last for more than 100 years or more It will withstand winds of more than 100 miles per hour.The total cost of The Angel of the North was £800,000.
